North Stars

North Stars are managed directly from the app. This page covers how to configure the feature in Settings and how to use the monthly report to share progress with stakeholders.

Settings: North Stars

North Stars are managed from Settings > North Stars. Organisation owners can enable the feature, create and archive North Stars. Once enabled, a North Star selector appears when creating or editing a flight, and a banner on the dashboard shows active North Stars with linked flight counts. This gives the whole team at-a-glance visibility into which strategic objectives are receiving investment.

Monthly Reports

North Stars are directional by design, but sometimes you need a snapshot. When leadership asks "what did we actually ship toward this objective last month?" or when you want to share progress with stakeholders who don't live in the dashboard, the monthly report gives you a structured summary without requiring anyone to manually compile data.

To access the report, click the Monthly Report button in the North Stars banner on the dashboard. This opens an in-app preview where you can browse the report before deciding whether to export it.

The preview is organised by North Star. Each section is expandable - click a North Star to reveal the flights that landed or were active during that month. The flight tables show the flight name, crew count, crate count, and cycle time (how many days the flight was in the air). Use the month picker at the top to navigate between months and see how investment shifted over time.

Flights that aren't linked to any North Star appear in a separate "Unlinked Flights" section at the bottom of the report. This makes it easy to spot work that happened outside of strategic objectives - whether that's intentional infrastructure work or flights that should have been linked but weren't.

When you're ready to share the report outside the app, click Export PDF. The PDF includes a dark-themed cover page, summary cards with high-level metrics, and detailed flight tables for each North Star. The export happens entirely in the browser - no data leaves the app, and no server-side rendering is involved. The PDF is generated on the fly and downloaded directly to your device.

The report is deliberately read-only. It reflects what happened, not what should happen. There are no editable fields, no goal-setting inputs, and no progress percentages to argue about. It's a record of work - flights that flew, crates that shipped, time that was spent. Use it to inform conversations, not to create new process.
